Tuesday, 28th August 2007LOLTrekLOLcats meets Star Trek with a dash of Settlers of Catan. I present… We has Tribbles and also Troubles. Friday, 24th August 2007Nessun DormaI’m betting Britain’s Got Talent will never be shown in Singapore, so I’m just going to spoil a bit of it for you… Here’s Paul Potts, arguably the most amazing amateur talent I’ve ever seen on television. He’s singing Puccini’s Nessun Dorma, arguably the most famous tenor operatic aria - it’s Luciano Pavarotti’s trademark song, but somehow Paul manages to infuse an emotional depth that just makes the lyrics of the song so much more meaningful. Especially that last bit when he repeatedly sings “vincerĂ²”, which means “I will win!” Whoa… finding it really hard to hold back tears at that point. Well, enjoy! Thursday, 16th August 2007Just Another CSA Musical…Date: Saturday, August 25th 2007 I come full circle here - from my first time watching the CSA Musical back in 2003, to my participation in the next two as director and assistant director respectively, to just being an actor on the stage that I love in 2007. It’ll be an experience, that’s for sure. Friday, 10th August 2007Look what came in the mail! It’s been slightly over half a year since I bought something from Jeanine… but when I saw THIS in her shop, I couldn’t resist. So I placed my order…. and Domokun came in the mail today! I LOVE MY DOMOKUN! My phone’s also been needing a new case… so I got Jeanine to make me a phone pouch… and it fits JUST RIGHT! This lady is a genius. Check out her new range of felt accessories! Thanks Jeanine! Wednesday, 08th August 2007Shepherd BookTake the Serenity Personality Test here I’ve only just discovered Firefly and Serenity - some 5 years too late - and I’m loving every new discovery. Despite the lag, it’s a good indication that I’m not too out of touch with the interests of my friends. Plus, there’s the pastor/chaplain character of Shepherd Derrial Book, whom I totally identify with - something which I felt was severely missing in Star Trek. I think it’s telling also that kakita and I both seem to identify with Dr. Simon Tam. There’s the GEP archetype right there. Well, thank goodness for the National Day holiday… it’ll give me time to catch up on a few more episdoes online. =) Alternatively, I’m just gonna buy the DVD collection. Heh. Monday, 06th August 2007A Klingon… finallyA dream came true on Saturday for me… After a whole decade of Star Trek fandom, I was finally transformed into the quintessential Klingon character of Lieutenant Commander Worf at CosCon 2007, part of the World Cyber Games held over the past four days. It was a most enjoyable experience - being in full costume has its perks. Everyone wants to take a photo with “you”, regardless of who’s underneath the mask. Definitely a reminder of what I truly wanted from my life without a mask - fame, recognition, acceptance in a world that’s not exactly ‘mainstream’. But it was also an epiphany of what I wanted to move away from - a naive fascination for glamour and all that accompanying jazz. When it came down to it, I appreciate the privacy I enjoyed now, and I wouldn’t trade it for all the photo opportunities. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord - the event where Jesus was revealed in his full divinity to the closest of his apostles: Peter, James and John. Like my namesake the Prince of the Apostles, I too sometimes blurt out nonsense in my excitement to be part of God’s revelation of his love for each and everyone of us. What’s most important though, is that God is not asking us to take charge and be in control of each situation that he places us in. Instead, he is reminding us to just listen to Jesus, the Beloved Son of God, and everything will go according to the perfect plan of God. Thursday, 02nd August 2007Girl on GirlThose who know me pretty well know that unlike direcow, I don’t really like the whole Reality TV genre of entertainment. There were exceptions, of course. I followed a couple of seasons of America’s Next Top Model and Beauty and the Geek religiously, but for the most part, such elimination contests just didn’t sit well with me. Often, there was just too much drama and not enough activity. Trust production company Munkysuperstar Pictures (the same people who brought you Girls Out Loud) to finally get their reality tv formula right! After the horrendous attempts at “entertainment” with Eye for a Guy seasons 1 and 2, their latest offering Girl on Girl is actually rather brilliant! The concept is straightforward. Six very ‘girly’ ladies compete with one another to do traditionally masculine tasks and earn points. At the end of the season, the points are totalled and the one with the highest score is one step closer to winning a hefty $10,000 prize. The catch? Each girl has to get votes from the public as well, through the official website. Only a combination of votes and points will determine who the overall champion is. It seems simple enough, but what immediately sets it apart from other reality tv offerings is how different and fresh the whole format of the show is. Instead of long drawn-out episodes from 30 minutes to an hour, Girl on Girl is a compact 15 minutes per episode. This not only reaches out to the podcasting community, a stroke of genius in itself, but also makes watching it a breeze! Furthermore, instead of doing the whole elimination process that other shows build their concept around, Girl on Girl takes only 6 girls and develops the whole show around them! My personal favourite aspect, however, is how Girl on Girl doesn’t hide that it is simply a GLORIFIED advertisement for CLEAR’s new range of shampoo for men. But because of the entertainment value and sheer subtlety of it, I am actually more willing to give CLEAR Men a try. It truly is the Asian version of AXE - right down to the sheer over-the-top machoness in the way they market it. The show’s up to its 2nd episode now and already it’s met my “needs” - Rosalyn Lee is the gorgeous host that doesn’t really seem to care for the contestants, Kay Kay is the brilliant and stunning contestant that deserves to win but probably won’t, Regine is hot favourite for her girl-next-door attitude and all-round appeal and Nicole is the bimbo whom everybody loves to hate. Ladies and gentlemen, I do believe we actually have our own local version of America’s Next Top Model! Don’t bother catching it on MediaCorp’s Channel 5, Thursdays at 11.30pm, when you can download the episode into your iPod at the official website or at Munkysuperstar’s TV network clicknetwork.tv. Trust me, this is good. |
