365 days to another Halloween…

For years I’ve been trying to do something on Halloween. This blog alone chronicles at least the past 4 annual attempts. The closest I ever came to celebrating it was back in 2002, when I was still attending Lindy Hop classes with Jitterbugs at their old studio along Orchard Road. And even then, I wasn’t in costume.

This year, I spent the weekend with the Franciscan Friars over at Holy Trinity Church selling their calendars, so I missed out on seeing what costumes were on parade over the weekend, when most of the nightspots in Singapore were having their Halloween celebrations. I’m sure I can rely on nightlife.sg to provide me with all the photos though.

Halloween itself falls on a Tuesday (that’s tomorrow!) and I won’t be in school to see all the muggers preparing for their exams. There was talk of having a Halloween party at the workplace, but since I haven’t been back in a fortnight (last week being Hari Raya Puasa), I don’t know what the situation is going to be like. I might just do some last minute costume hunting, though… like a latex mask and bring it to work tomorrow. Haha.

Halloween has always fascinated me, personally. I come from the Universal Studios school of thought when it comes to horror, following the footsteps of luminaries such as Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr. Those are the kinds of monsters I want to see roaming the streets, not superheroes, fairy princesses or sci-fi geeks. Give me vampires, werewolves, horrifying creatures of all origins… that’ll create a Halloween night that I’ll be satisfied with.

And then, of course, I’ll wake up the next morning ready to celebrate All Saints’ Day.

About Bill Shatner…

I’ve been a huge Star Trek fan for over a decade now, and for most of my teenage years, The Next Generation television series became my cornerstone for the kind of geek culture I would grow up embracing.

Yet in the past few months, I’ve been so immersed in the original Star Trek series, due to the fact that I’m actually doing it as part of a Lit module. Combine this with the fact that I work in a law firm that seems to be the basis for much of Boston Legal’s episode material… makes for a lot of William Shatner overdose.

So whilst refusing to admit that my favourite Trek character is now Captain James T. Kirk, I present to you just how much of an icon Bill Shatner has been for modern cult entertainment:

Taken from “Comedy Central: Roast of William Shatner”, a must watch!

The Naming of Names…

I wonder if Scrabble ever factored into picking a child’s name. If all full names were scored, I’m guessing 25 would be a decent average in Singapore.

My Scrabble© Score is: 25.

EDIT: Just found this while surfing… Bluegrass group Nickel Creek does a cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic”.

Why is it…

… that every time I get all angsty about relationship issues and my severe lack at figuring out what it takes to actually deserve that special someone in your life…

… I end up reading a webcomic? And not just any webcomic, but a semi-serious, semi-comedic one about slightly kooky characters and their interactions with one another.

I’m talking about Questionable Content.

It’s a webcomic that I picked up early this year, but I kinda stopped after a month or so. I don’t particularly get most of the indie-rock references the comic creator uses, but hey, at least I heard about the band named Mogwai before their gig here a couple of months back thanks to QC.

I’m currently reading through April’s strips and leading man aka all-round good guy has just gotten attached to one of the main female characters. It’s like a replay of Ross and Rachel from Friends, except less preppy and more emo.

Anyway, I was on MSN last night and a good friend from CSA and I discussed my favourite topic… me. Basically, what I got out of it was I’m an arrogant prick that is well, way too focussed on my own attempt at happiness and not on doing what’s right and living out to the best that God has made me to be. Of course, this is totally off tangent to what she was really trying to drum into my head, but my mind works that way, unfortunately.

Well, whatever it is, it’s clear to me that God needs me to pray about my relationship angst. And not just the whole “conversation with my friend God” kinda prayer that I’ve been doing for most of my life… but the whole “pray till you get His answer” kinda thing. I think I stopped doing the latter because it always came back with “God says ‘No’”.

I’d love to promise to make all these changes I’m suggesting. After all, most people would be infinitely happier with a less arrogant but more self-confident me. So why do I suddenly feel more vulnerable than ever at the thought?

EDIT: Heh… a new ‘Fear’ post out of nowhere. Haven’t had the time to get all moody in months. Women have ‘that time of the month’. I get all emo this time each semester. Haha.

This is arguably the best video I’ve seen in a LONG time. Enjoy! The song is nice too!

Just goes to show: Juan Mann makes all the difference. The world needs Juan Mann to try something special. Just Juan, that’s all it took.

My playlist is really weird, and despite having only 200 songs, I think it’s a good indication of wide variety of music I end up listening to. That, and I realise I wouldn’t be able to do my own 30 songs despite just listening to all of them. Anyway, here goes:

Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is cheating. no cheating, please

1. Say your prayers, little onenoelbynature
2. I can’t light no more of your darkness
3. Well, love, love me darling – Jason got the title but not the artiste
4. Pretty woman, walkin’ down the streetgolden monkey

6. Gimme fuel, gimme fire, Gimme that which I desirelyndon

HINT: I cheated for number 9… it was the first line of the first verse, but not the first line of the song, which happens to be the song’s title.

More such lists from raydance, Direcow (hard and easy), crapshoot and pushupblah.
