Back

I’ve spoken to a handful of people who were worried about me. I’m fine. I have too much at stake in my life to end it myself. I’m also a coward who can never take the next step off the ledge. Either way, I’m probably never going to die by my own doing.

I’m fine.

Rogier van der Weyden. Deposition. c.1435-1440. Oil on panel. Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain.

Iesvs Nazarevs Rex Ivderovm – Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.

“What I have written, I have written.” – John 19:22

It never fails to astound me how Pilate, despite being a weak puppet leader of the Roman Empire, still had the presence of mind to pen the four powerful words to be hung over the symbol of salvation – the crucified Christ. Because of this action of Pilate, the only recorded one that he did of his own accord, we Catholics have a striking and moving image of the “king” as he gives up his earthly life – broken and alone.

“Hail, King of the Jews!”

I don’t know how many of you would appreciate the devotion of hundreds of Catholics gathering at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Victoria Street to commemorate Good Friday with an annual re-enactment of the deposition of the Body of Christ, followed by a procession around the church. I was there last night, as I am almost every year. And like every year I’m there, there’s a strong sense of being a part of the event, of knowing that the sacrifice of Jesus two millenia ago was for us as well. As my friend aptly put it, “experiencing (the traditions of the Church) makes me love being a Catholic”.

Have a very Blessed weekend.

Sappho

Every blog has at least some miniscule form of homosexual discussion. Not this one. Today I’m going to shock, scare and generally elicit the same emotions and frustrations all of you tend to get when reading my blog.

It’s common occurence to see the Life! section of The Straits Times get carried away with lots and lots of supposedly-controversial topics. Yesterday, their Arts section on page L3 had back to back reviews of two R(A) productions: the locally-written Jointly and Severably and the abstract Japanese double-bill Ha-Ko.

The former, written by Eleanor Wong – whom I shall always remember as the chairperson who seemed to speak more than a whole team of debators combined – is the third in a trilogy (such an ugly ugly word) focusing on the life and times of gay lawyer Ellen Toh and her entourage of lesbian friends. The cast is filled with some of my favourite local talents including lead Tan Kheng Hua, Melody Chen and Pamela Oei – but what’s more important is the theme which insists that relationships – homosexual or otherwise – are always filled with the same fears, surprises, bliss and ecstacies.

The latter, two plays by writer Yukio Mishima explores two different forms of homosexual love. The first, Hanjo, depicts an artist who falls in love with a mad girl whom she houses and cares for. The second, Sotoba Komachi, is a surreal look at the self-inflicted narcissism of an aged woman who is too in love with her former self to look forward.

If nothing more, the publishing of these two reviews has incited an interest in researching the culture of female homosexual love in drama. It is unfortunate that, still being 20, I am unable to catch the two productions. However, drama is just one form of expressing what must be a rising trend.

Veteran series Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore has explored the relationship between two “normal” women. Half-finshed webcomic Pander explores a girl’s crazy entry into the world of homosexual love. Heck, the webcomic which I was writing for 313 was going to include a lesbian relationship (I’m not saying who).
